The Official Blitzball Rulebook For the MLB (Final Edition)
Note: Any disputes regarding these rules should be settled by team captains before the first pitch is thrown.
This document serves as the governing set of regulations for all Blitzball matches. Players are expected to uphold the spirit of competition and fair play at all times.
I. Gameplay & Outs
1. The Aerial Tag Rule
If a fielder attempts to record an out by throwing the ball at a runner, the ball must be in the air when it makes contact with the runner.
- If the ball hits an object (ground, wall, furniture) and then hits the runner while the ball is still in motion or in the air, the runner is OUT.
- If the ball settles on the ground or comes to a complete rest before contacting the runner, the runner is SAFE.
2. Pitching, Strikes, and Walks
The count resets for every new batter.
- Strikeout: A batter is out after accumulating 4 strikes.
- Walk: A batter is awarded first base after accumulating 5 balls.
- Hit-by-Pitch: If a pitch hits the batter, it is automatically ruled two balls.
II. The Challenge System
3. Challenge Protocols
Teams are granted 2 Challenges per game to dispute rulings.
- The Helmet Tap: To initiate, a player must tap their helmet immediately following the play. Failure to signal promptly results in a forfeit of the right to challenge.
- Successful Challenge: The team retains the challenge (count stays at 2).
- Unsuccessful Challenge: The team loses the challenge (count decreases).
- Once a team has 0 challenges remaining, all subsequent field rulings are final.
III. Expanded Rules of Play
4. The "Ghost Runner" Rule
In games with limited space or players, a "Ghost Runner" may be used for any player who reaches base. The runner cannot be picked off, but they must advance based strictly on the batter's performance.
5. The Mercy Rule
A 10-run mercy rule is in effect. If one team leads by 10 or more runs after 4 full innings, the game is concluded immediately.
6. Boundary Clarification (Ground Rules)
- Dead Zone: Any ball hit into a designated "Dead Zone" (e.g., thick brush, over a perimeter fence) is a Ground Rule Double. All runners advance two bases.
- Foul Poles: Any ball hitting a foul pole is ruled a Home Run.
7. Substitution Policy
Teams may rotate defensive players between half-innings. The batting order must remain fixed; if a player must leave, their spot in the lineup is skipped without penalty.
IV. Professional Conduct & Baserunning
8. The "Equipment Check" Rule
All players must use the standard-issue Blitzball. Any modification to the ball is strictly prohibited. Use of a modified ball results in immediate disqualification.
9. Interference & Obstruction
- Fielding Interference: If a fielder stands in the baseline without possession of the ball, it is Obstruction, and the runner is awarded the next base.
- Batting Interference: If a runner interferes with a fielder attempting to catch a ball, the runner is OUT, and all other runners must return to their previous base.
10. Stealing Policy
Stealing bases is permitted; however, timing is strictly regulated:
- The Timing Restriction: If a runner attempts to steal while the pitcher has their leg in the air (during the windup/delivery phase), the runner is automatically ruled OUT.
11. The Pitcher's Stance
The pitcher must remain in contact with the pitching rubber/mark until the ball is released. A "Balk" will be called for illegal motions, resulting in a free base for all runners.
V. Tie-Breaker Protocol
12. Extra Innings (The "International" Format)
If the game is tied after the regulation number of innings, play shall continue into extra innings using the following format to ensure a timely conclusion:
- Placement: To start the extra inning, the team at bat begins with a runner placed on Second Base. This runner is the player who made the last out in the previous inning.
- Sudden Death: If the game remains tied after one full extra inning, the next inning will be "Sudden Death." The first team to score a run in this inning is declared the winner immediately.
Extra Rule
13. Gloves
Gloves are permitted for use in the Minor League Blitzball games, as long as players don't have any substances or performance enhancing chemicals on the glove, or on the hands. Players are also permitted to use their hands if the player chooses to. This also goes for batting gloves.
